Thirty Years on One High Street

There's a practical difference between a company that covers Billericay and one that's based in it.

Billericay Houses, and What Tends to Suit Them

Billericay isn't one kind of housing stock, and the right surface changes street by street.

Around the High Street and the station

Older frontages, often narrow, sometimes with the pavement close to the door. Space is usually the constraint rather than choice of material. Cobble-pattern imprinted concrete and clay block paving both sit well against period brick, and getting the levels right at the threshold matters more than anywhere else.

The interwar and thirties roads

Generous plots and wide frontages, which is where you can actually do something with a driveway rather than just surface it. In-and-out drives, turning areas and borders all become possible. This is where imprinted concrete tends to look its best, because there's enough area to see the pattern.

Post-war and later estates

Smaller frontages, and very often a front garden being converted to parking for the first time. Drainage is the first question rather than the last - once you're paving more than five square metres, the water has to be dealt with on your own land.

The village edges

Out towards Great Burstead, Little Burstead, Ramsden Bellhouse and South Green, approaches get longer and gravel starts making more sense than a hard surface. Ground conditions vary more too.

Planning, Drainage and Dropped Kerbs in Billericay

A few local things worth knowing before you start.

Billericay comes under Basildon Borough Council for planning. Most driveways don't need planning permission, but if you're paving over five square metres of front garden with a surface water can't pass through, you need to deal with drainage on your own land - a soakaway, a permeable surface, or a channel to a border.

Dropped kerbs are separate and go through Essex Highways rather than the borough.

There's also a conservation area covering part of the town centre, which can affect what's appropriate on a frontage.
